Secondment Worker Visa

The Secondment Worker visa is part of the Global Business Mobility (GBM) Visa category, designed for employees of overseas organisations who are temporarily assigned to the UK to work for a different organisation under a high-value contract approved by the Home Office.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Secondment Worker visa, applicants must:

  • Employment Requirement: Be an existing employee of an overseas organisation that has a high-value contract with a UK sponsor approved by the Home Office.
  • Work Experience: Have worked for an overseas employer for at least 12 months outside the UK.
  • Certificate of Sponsorship: Obtain a certificate from the UK sponsor detailing the work to be undertaken in the UK.
  • Job Role: Perform a job in the UK that is on the list of eligible occupations.

Application Process

The application involves two steps:

  1. Certificate of Sponsorship: The UK sponsor must issue a certificate confirming the role, contractual details, and eligibility.
  2. Visa Application: Submit an online visa application with supporting documents, including proof of employment, eligibility, and evidence of maintenance funds if required.

Processing times vary; applicants should check the latest guidelines for current processing times.

Visa Duration and Conditions

The visa is granted for the shorter of:

  • 12 months after the start date of the job detailed in the Certificate of Sponsorship.
  • The time given on the Certificate of Sponsorship plus 14 days.

You can extend your visa by 12 months, up to a maximum of 2 years.

Fees and Maintenance Funds

  • Application Fees: £298 per person for the visa.
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £1,035 per year for each applicant and dependent.
  • Maintenance Funds: £1,270 for the main applicant, plus:
    • £285 for a partner.
    • £315 for a first child.
    • £200 for each additional child.

These maintenance requirements may be waived if the sponsor certifies maintenance on the Certificate of Sponsorship.

Bringing Family Members to the UK

The visa allows you to bring your spouse or partner and dependent children. Each family member must apply separately, pay the visa fee, and demonstrate evidence of maintenance funds unless the sponsor certifies their maintenance.
